The Colours and their Symbolizations

Our national flag consists of the four colours: red, yellow, black and white. The national people of Tamil Eelam have based their struggle for an independent country on basic political and human rights. The yellow of our flag represents the fact that our struggle for freedom is justified and that the Tamil Nation will always stand on the side of justice and freedom.

However, forming an official independent Tamil Eelam cannot be seen as obtaining full freedom. Social injustices within the Tamil Eelam society must be fully abolished. The caste system must also be abolished. Women rights must be advocated. For all these social injustices to be abolished, revolutionary changes must be made. Equality must be permanently engraved within our society. These political aspects are represented by the colour red on our national flag.

The path to freedom is a path full of obstacles and is filled with death, destruction, and grief. To face these obstacles, death, destruction, and grief along with the tense situations after freedom one must have a strong will. One must have unshakeable trust/belief and determination. This is symbolized by the colour black.

The freedom movement, people and leaders must always maintain honesty and integrity. This is represented by the colour white.
