Every single country in this world has determined their own unique flag that represents its people and freedom. The respect and value given to this flag is a direct representation of the respect and love citizens have for their traditional homeland. The Tamil people’s historical governance of their traditional homeland and their will to freedom from alien occupation has been best exemplified by their national symbols. National symbols are important for a nation and are the cornerstone of political aspirations of any people. Throughout history the Tamil people have been subject to occupation and oppression. The occupation of the Tamil homeland by foreign and alien powers destroyed the Tamil sovereignty that this rich and ancient nation once enjoyed. The defeat of the monarchy of the Jaffna Kingdom in 1619 by the colonial Portuguese forced the Tamils to concede their Naanthi flag. The Sword flag belonging to the monarchy in the Vanni Kingdom was erased from history with the defeat of Pandara Vanniyan in the 1800s. During the occupation the national flags and national symbols of the Tamil people were removed from their history and subsequently their lives. The national flag of Tamileelam represents the sheer determination of the Tamil people’s yearning for emancipation and freedom from foreign rule and occupation. The Tamileelam national flag is the symbol of the Tamil people’s attempt to regain their sovereignty which was lost centuries ago to foreign occupation and rule. Today, the national flag of Tamileelam flies high in the hearts and minds of the Tamil people worldwide. It is embedded in their subconscious and in their psyche. It is the symbol of an ancient civilization, with a rich culture, history and traditions. Today, as Tamils we wholeheartedly pledge allegiance to the national flag of Tamileelam and what it stands for. In uniting under the national flag and endorsing it, Tamils hope to send a strong message to the world. Through the Tamileelam National Flag Campaign we will demonstrate to the entire world that Tamils all around the world wholeheartedly accept the national flag of Tamileelam, which is central to the identity of Tamils worldwide. |
